Restoration works

In September 2006, Heritage Lottery Fund gave approval to proceed with a £2.2million restoration project for Hotham Park.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust acts as a key partner in this project. Capital works commenced on site in October 2007 and are now almost complete

Broadly speaking, the works consisted of:

  1. Restoring 5.5 acres of derelict land (formerly known as Rainbow's End) back into the main body of the park;
  2. Improving the surface drainage of the park;
  3. Restoring the historic clock, bell and clock tower;
  4. Improving the setting of Hotham Park House;
  5. Reopening of closed gateways in Church Path;
  6. Restoring and converting the Park Lodge as offices for the Trust and Arun District Council;
  7. Restoring Fletcher's Pond for boating;
  8. Tree works as part of a long-term tree strategy

Design of works to the physical structure of the park were guided by strategic plans to ensure that the restoration contributed to the social and economic development of Bognor Regis, by improving access and addressing deprivation. These issues were detailed by the Park's Access Plan, Audience Development Plan and Training Plan. Sustainability of the works is supported by a 10 year Management and Maintenance Plan.

Perhaps the most visible and exciting part of the work has been the restoration of 5.5 acres of derelict land in the centre of Bognor Regis back into the park. This former parkland was leased as a leisure concession in 1977 but fell into derelicion when is closed in 1998. Since then, the site has evolved its own wildlife interest, and the restoration works have been sensitive to conserving this while enabling safe public access.
